Introduction
Sometimes just thinking about getting organized is overwhelming. And what do we do when we get overwhelmed? We get paralyzed and may even give up on what we are trying to accomplish. There’s just too much to think about. It’s too hard. Where to start?! What organization tools do I need?
Well the fact is managing a household, meeting career demands, or just trying to balance your personal life does require some organization tools to achieve efficiency. And perhaps for us to maintain our sanity!
Let me be clear. When I use the word organization, I DO NOT mean everything has to be perfect.
When I started this blog, I started really paying attention to the other blogs and social media in the declutter and organization space. And what I found was so much of it seems to lean toward perfectionism. Photograph after photograph depicts perfect closets with organization tools like matching bins and baskets with perfect labels. Even the stuff stored in those bins and baskets was perfect.
That’s not realistic. And I’m all about striving for the realistic. Because striving for perfection is just asking to fail. Even if you can achieve in your home what those perfect photographs depict, how long is that sustainable?
So for this article I want to keep it real. I want to share basic organization tools that you can mix and match to fit your specific situation—your home, your personality, your style.
In this guide, we’ll explore 15 organization tools to do just that.

Daily Planners

Benefits of Using a Daily Planner
Let’s start at the very top. How do you keep track of what is happening in your life? Doctor appointments, kids’ activities, and so on?
Daily planners are fundamental organization tools for anyone looking to stay organized. They offer the ability to visually track appointments, errands, and tasks, leaving little room for forgetfulness. A daily planner provides a structured outline of your day, allowing you to allocate time effectively for tasks that are most important.
By laying out your day in advance, you can prioritize and make sure nothing critical slips through the cracks. At the end of each year, I use my current planner to help me plan the next year. And I save my old planners so I can use them as a historical record of past tasks and accomplishments. This has really helped me when trying to remember my progress and also for setting future goals.

Introduction to Bullet Journaling
Bullet journaling is an analog system created by Ryder Carroll, designed to help track the past, order the present, and plan for the future. Known for its customizability, the bullet journal can adapt to any need, from tracking daily activities to managing long-term goals. The system uses bullets, symbols, and signifiers to categorize tasks, events, and notes, which can be tailored to the user’s style and requirements. Its flexibility is one of its greatest strengths among other organization tools, allowing users to create a unique organizational system that truly fits their individual lifestyle.

Tips for Creating an Effective Bullet Journal
To create an effective bullet journal, start by selecting a notebook that appeals to your aesthetic preferences and durability requirements. Begin with a simple index page to log all your entries, making it easy to locate specific information later. Utilize color-coding and personalization to bring life to your entries, whether through stickers, drawings, or highlighted sections. Establish a routine for updating your bullet journal daily, ensuring you transfer tasks and review your progress regularly. This practice not only keeps you organized but also enhances your mindfulness throughout the day.
Calendar Systems

Comparison Between Digital and Paper Calendars
Calendars are essential for managing appointments, deadlines, and events efficiently. When choosing between digital and paper calendars, the decision largely depends on personal preference and lifestyle. Digital calendars like Google Calendar offer the convenience of integration across devices, synchronization with other apps, and the ability to share events with others easily. On the other hand, paper calendars don’t rely on technology, which means no technical issues. I think physically marking dates or jotting notes helps with me remember things better.

Recommendation for Different Needs
For tech-savvy people who like to have constant access to their schedules, organization tools like digital calendars provide that accessibility and flexibility. However, if you enjoy the tactile experience and find digital calendars distracting or impersonal, a traditional paper calendar may be more your speed. Companies like Emily Ley and Rifle Paper Co. offer unique designs to complement your desk beautifully. Ultimately, choose what works best for your daily habits and supports your organizational goals.

Also remember security features like password protection and encryption help safeguard sensitive or personal notes.

I have two lists. One is EVERYTHING I want/need to accomplish. From that list, I have a separate list of the things I want to accomplish each day or week.
Using these lists helps me keep my to-do’s prioritized and manageable. They help me keep the overwhelm at bay by getting all of it out of my head and onto paper. I believe it helps me reduce procrastination and making even the most daunting tasks appear achievable.
When I see a list, it motivates me to complete the activity. And then there is the all-important and satisfying moment when I can check off the list what I have completed. I love that feeling and that spurs me on to the next thing!

Enable cloud backups so you never lose critical information due to device failure. Think about what would happen if you were to lose all of your photos! Use widgets to keep vital information at a glance and maintain an updated media library by routinely categorizing or deleting old files. Cloud Storage Solutions

Importance of Cloud Storage for File Organization
Cloud storage serves as a safeguard for your digital content, providing a remote, accessible location for your files. It ensures that your files are backed-up, reducing the risk of data loss from system crashes or physical damage. Cloud storage also allows easy access to files from any location, offering the flexibility to work remotely or collaborate with others. By providing ample space for documents, photos, and videos, cloud storage not only eases device storage limitations but also enhances productivity and coordination.
My laptop was damaged a few months ago, and I had an initial wave of panic trying to remember the last time I backed up my hard drive. Then my 15-year-old son quickly reminded, “Mom! It’s okay. All your stuff’s in the cloud!”
Top Cloud Storage Options
Several top-tier options offer reliable cloud storage solutions. Google Drive is highly popular, providing seamless integration with Google’s suite of services and offering ample free storage. Dropbox is renowned for its ease of use and collaborative capabilities. It’s ideal for sharing files with colleagues or managing team projects. Microsoft OneDrive offers tight integration with Microsoft Office applications, which is advantageous for frequent Office users. Selecting the best service depends on the required storage capacity, the nature of your files, and any professional integration needs.
File Organization Tools

Physical and Digital File Organization Tools
Keeping important documents accessible and orderly can be achieved using both physical and digital tools. Physical filing cabinets and folders help categorize paper documents, such as tax returns or medical records. Digital tools like Adobe Acrobat allow digital file organization, helping you sort and store various file types in an accessible and compact format. With options like digital scanning, you can also convert paper files to digital.
Best Practices for Keeping Files Neat
A bunch of chaotic, jumbled files helps no one! To keep your files in order, clearly name your files so you can quickly find what you need. Regularly audit your filing system to eliminate duplicates or outdated information. Use a color-coding or labeling system for files to quickly identify contents. For digital files, utilize folders and subfolders, ensuring a logical structuring method is followed to group related documents together. By maintaining a dedicated filing routine, you can keep your workspace (and your mind!) clutter-free.
Desk Organizers

Types of Desk Organizers to Consider
When I am feeling overwhelmed and having a hard time keeping up with all the things, the first place I look is my desk area. If I’m feeling scattered, it is almost certain that my desk has gotten messy. Messy desk = messy mind!
A tidy desk can significantly boost productivity and focus. Choosing the right desk organization tools, such as trays, drawer dividers, and pen holders, keeps essentials within reach while minimizing clutter. Multi-tiered trays are excellent for sorting papers and mail, reducing the chance of important documents being misplaced. Cable management tools also help prevent wires and chargers from tangling, providing a streamlined and clean desktop appearance.

Start with a full declutter, sorting clothes into “Sell”, “Donate”, and “Keep” piles to eliminate unused garments. Let me take a moment here to say I recommend few to none being put into the “Sell” pile. Unless you are selling high-dollar items, it is highly likely selling regular clothing staples will not be worth you time to photograph, desk, list and ship or meet up with your buyer.
Using slim hangers really does save space in your closet. And they look so much nicer, too! Use drawer dividers for smaller items like socks and accessories.
